Who is the singer of Ghost?
The question that has haunted many longtime fans: who is behind the mask of Papa Emeritus? Who are the mysterious sidekicks known as the Nameless Ghouls? The anonymity of its members was one of the band’s cornerstones. The mystery would likely have lasted a few more years if four of its former musicians (the famous Nameless Ghouls) had not revealed their identities and filed a lawsuit against the band’s leader over not sharing the profits from album sales and tours.
The mask would fall on August 17, 2017, during the radio show Sommar i P1, when the mysterious singer concluded the interview by saying: “My name is Tobias Forge, and I’m the one hiding behind the mask in GHOST. Thank you for your attention.”
Who are the characters portrayed by Tobias Forge?
Papa Emeritus I (2010 – 2013)
The first character appears on the cover of the debut album ‘Opus Eponymous’ released in 2010, and the myth is born. From their very first live show, the Nameless Ghouls take the stage on "Masked Ball." Papa Emeritus, meanwhile, arrives without saying a word, swinging a censer.
He wears a black and red chasuble, with religious symbols embroidered on his outfit, including inverted crosses. On his head, he wears a majestic white mitre with the band’s symbol: an inverted cross forming a G. His face is crudely painted white with heavy black lines, and he looks like a zombie pope.
Papa Emeritus II (2013 – 2015)
Papa Emeritus II enters the stage in 2013 in the "Year Zero" video. His face is painted like a skeleton, much more realistic than his predecessor’s. His wardrobe is once again in dark tones, mixing black and green. His headpiece is silver and white.
Papa Emeritus III (2015 – 2018)
On May 29, 2015, a video posted by Ghost announces the succession of Papa Emeritus II. We see him being thanked for failing in his duty. Papa Emeritus III is the younger brother by three months of the previous Papa. His look is more elaborate. In 2016, he is seen more casually, without his mitre and papal robe. Only the makeup remains.
Cardinal Copia / Papa Emeritus IV (2018 – 2024)
Cardinal Copia appears with the album Prequelle. He is a new, younger, more charismatic character. In 2020, during the Imperatour, Cardinal Copia is “promoted” and becomes Papa Emeritus IV.
Papa V Perpetua! Since 2025
The fifth to bear the name, who lost the title “Emeritus” and gained a name: Perpetua.
What are the Nameless Ghouls?
Always lurking in the shadows, the Nameless Ghouls appear alongside Papa Emeritus during Ghost concerts. Nameless, faceless, they are interchangeable, like silhouettes shaped to serve a single purpose: to support Papa Emeritus and carry Ghost’s message and music further.
But behind their loyalty lies a much higher obedience. Because it is not the papas they truly serve… We have seen them, with their own hands, put the first three to death, following Seestor’s orders. All signs point to the fact that they are merely the instruments of an even darker hierarchy: Seestor, Mr. Sultarian… and today, no doubt, Father Imperator.
