The biography of a legendary band
The beginnings
The band was founded in December 1975 by Steve Harris and Dave Murray, in the midst of the boom of the British punk scene dominated by bands like The Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Ramones. In its early days, Iron Maiden went through an unstable period marked by frequent lineup changes. The band drew inspiration from British hard rock acts such as Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy. In 1978, Doug Sampson on drums and Paul Di'Anno on vocals joined the band.
In December 1978, they recorded their first demo, Soundhouse Tapes, which achieved notable success thanks to word of mouth. The following year, the band signed a contract with EMI for four albums.
First successes: Iron Maiden and Killers
In 1979, the band recorded its first self-titled album, which met with immediate success. Their live performance of Running Free on a popular show boosted their profile. The band then opened for Kiss in Europe and played alongside Judas Priest in the United States. Adrian Smith joined the lineup for the release of their second album, Killers in 1981.
The rise with Bruce Dickinson
Paul Di'Anno was replaced in 1981 by Bruce Dickinson, whose melodic voice and wide range brought a fresh energy to the band. The album The Number of the Beast (1982) reached number one in the UK and went gold in the United States. Tracks like The Number of the Beast, Run to the Hills and Hallowed Be Thy Name became essential classics. The band then launched its second world tour with 179 concerts before 1 million spectators. Nicko McBrain joined the band on drums, forming the most popular lineup of Iron Maiden.
The golden age: Piece of Mind and Powerslave
Piece of Mind (1983) marked a turning point with complex compositions and iconic tracks like Flight of Icarus, The Trooper and Revelations. In 1984, Iron Maiden continued their momentum with the massive album Powerslave, supported by the World Slavery Tour, considered the most accomplished in their discography, featuring tracks like Aces High, 2 Minutes to Midnight and the epic The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (13 minutes).
Innovations and new horizons
One year after the legendary live album Live After Death, Iron Maiden returned with Somewhere in Time (1986). On this album, the band explored electronic sounds and a unique futuristic atmosphere. The album Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988) incorporated progressive rock elements. The band reached a peak in popularity and found themselves headlining the Monsters of Rock festival in Donington.
The 90s, the rebirth, and the legend
The 90s brought significant changes. Bruce Dickinson launched a solo career, replaced by Blaze Bayley. In 1999, Dickinson and Adrian Smith returned, and Iron Maiden recorded Brave New World (2000), which ended in triumph at Rock In Rio before 254,000 spectators. The band continued to innovate with Dance of Death (2003), A Matter of Life and Death (2006), The Final Frontier (2010) and The Book of Souls (2015). Their seventeenth studio album, Senjutsu, was released six years later and confirmed their legend.
